Procesos infecciosos del sistema nervioso central en el preludio del siglo XXI; una revisión analítica

Las infecciones del sistema nervioso central son, entre los diversos procesos infecciosos, de las más complejas, en términos de morbilidad y mortalidad, a las que un paciente nos enfrenta. Por lo tanto, se requiere que el diagnóstico sea preciso e inmediato. Se revisan las infecciones más frecuentes del sistema nervioso central y se analizan los estudios del líquido cefalorraquídeo y los conceptos de meningitis séptica y aséptica. Si bien las infecciones virales son más comunes, la meningitis bacteriana es la que tiene el potencial de causar un rápido deterioro, situación con la que el médico debe estar familiarizado. La encefalitis viral suele acompañar a la meningitis viral con signos neurológicos focales y deterioro cognitivo que puede confundirse con otras afecciones neurológicas. Otros procesos infecciosos del sistema nervioso central, como los producidos por priones, también se incluyen en esta revisión. Infections of the Central Nervous System (CNS) are among the most difficult we face in terms of morbidity and mortality for a patient. Therefore, they require precise and immediate diagnosis. In this paper we review the most common infections of the central nervous system and include an analysis about the study of the cerebrospinal fluid and the concepts of septic meningitis and aseptic meningitis. Although viral infections are more common, bacterial meningitis is the one with the potential to cause a rapidly deteriorating condition that the physician should be familiar with. Viral encephalitis frequently accompanies viral meningitis and can produce focal neurologic findings and cognitive difficulties that can mimic other neurologic disorders. Other infectious diseases of the central nervous system, such as those produced by prions are explored in this review.
